Train stations are perpetual transit hubs where a myriad personal stories intersect and fade without a trace, while the architecture remains a silent witness.
Grenzbahnhof examines this complex. An installation-performance hybrid, it starts as the former and moves on to live improvisations by the Basel Musik Akademie Improv Ensemble before ultimately looping back to its original state, mirroring the station’s constant flux.
The soundscape is composed from field recordings at Basel Central Station, transformed into ambient drones and glitch‑like bursts that move through space via an experimental 12‑channel setup: Beyond a quadraphonic perimeter, irregularly placed speakers create an “acoustic forest” producing zigzagging spatial paths, that audiences are allowed to freely navigate during the performance.
Commissioned for the 2021 edition of Zeiträume Basel festival.
