I PROMISE
I won’t stop now, I promise is a 4-channel fixed media piece that explores spatialisation and sound design through the systematic transformation of a single sonic source.
All material originates from improvisations by harpist Alice Belougou, employing an extended palette of techniques including prepared harp, natural harmonics, pedal slides and rubber mallets and subjects them to a rigorous exercise in sound design, processing this source material through increasingly aggressive transformations until it becomes largely unrecognisable.
While the piece is primarily an investigation into the malleable nature of timbre and an exercise in deep listening, it also positions itself as a commentary on the conspicuous absence of coherent rhythm in much contemporary composition. By stripping away rhythmic coherence, the piece engages with rhythm as a primordial and foundational element—one that precedes even polyphony in music cultures worldwide—rendering its absence particularly resonant.
The piece was premiered at the AKUT concert series in Basel, Switzerland.
