Lightingale is an electronic controller. Its basic design is a 5x5 matrix of light sensors. The controller can be played with different light sources such as flashlights or stage lights, or by covering a constant light source in a kind of shadow play. It is both very physical and extremely reactive, making learning to play very intuitive.

Lightingale allows the player to translate gestures into control voltages, which are then available to control desired musical parameters. The gestural input is multidimensional: the xy position of the light can be used as a control signal, as can the distance, speed or intensity of the light source. It is also possible to play it with multiple light sources.
