In Recollector, we wanted to explore how public spaces retain traces of human presence only through material remnants - broken bottles, graffiti, litter - but aside from those the moments that unfolded there remain largely untraceable. This led us to envision a space with its own active memory: an environment capable of recording and preserving auditory and visual traces of its inhabitants for future visitors to witness.
The installation’s physical form consists of a curved metal sheet spanning an entire wall, while on the opposite wall, a rotating light box projects a vertical strip of light through a slit, slowly traversing the sculpture across a 120° arc. The metal panel doubles as a speaker membrane, transforming the entire sculpture into a massive loudspeaker. The installation then captures traces of its visitors—during quiet moments, it records footsteps and voices, which are then transformed into glitches and spectral residue that emerge and fade within the audio stream. The installation premiered at the 2019 edition of 48h of Neukölln.
