THE MYSTIC

Live Soundtrack
Video: Lark (Lyra) Hill

The Mystic is a 2011 experimental analogue short film by American artist Lark (Lyra) Hill. The visual techniques used to create the film include analog effects such as sewing, bi-packing, matting, multiple exposure, and optical printing. These techniques combine with its rapid, strict pacing to form an almost trancelike experience.

The high tempo presented a challenge when working with sound, as the music had to keep with the film’s flow, key in maintaining its rhythm and intensity. The core of the soundtrack was built from a single arpeggio.
I then created variations that were layered to create an evolving textured sound while preseving the original rhythm and pacing. The resulting collage creates a hypnotic, overwhelming auditory experience that mirrors the visual energy.

The Mystic was performed live as part of the Belgrade-based Kinopleme Live Soundtrack festival series.
